Lateral-entry officers do not need to take the written examination but still need to pass the physical fitness test. Lateral-entry police officers may start at a higher step (Step 3 or higher, depending on experience) if employed by the Village of New Albany.
If you believe that you qualify under our lateral-entry program, please submit an application indicating your qualifications.
Written and Physical Fitness Tests
The first steps of the hiring process for police officer are the written test and physical fitness test. These tests are administered on the same date/time.
The written test is held at the New Albany-Plain Local K-1 Elementary School located at 5101 Swickard Woods Blvd. Parking is available in the school parking lot. Once in the parking lot, follow the signs for the testing location. The physical fitness test follows immediately after the written test and is held at the nearby New Albany-Plain Local High School facility.
The New Albany Police Department uses a scenario-based written test that includes response analysis to different types of police calls. Report-writing skills and reading comprehension are also tested. Applicants may choose to review the practice test site before taking the written exam. Note: The testing company requires a small fee to take the full number of practice tests. Click here for more information.
The physical fitness test is graded on a pass-fail basis and consists of five physical fitness standards listed here:
Sit-ups - This one minute (60 seconds) timed test requires an applicant to complete 34 sit-ups. Applicant lies on his/her back with legs bent with his/her hands crossed over the chest. The test scorer will hold applicant's feet down on the mat while applicant rises up and touches his/her elbows on the thigh before returning to the starting position.
Push-ups - This one minute (60 seconds) timed test requires an applicant to complete 25 push-ups starting from the standard push-up position. Keeping the back straight, the applicant will lower him/herself to within 6” of the floor and return to the starting position.
Bench Press - Using a standard 7' Olympic bar, an applicant will press one time a total of .64 his/her body weight. A scale will be available on the testing date to determine passing weight. Lift-offs may be utilized.
300 Meter Run - A candidate is required to run 3/4 of a lap around a standard ¼-mile track within 1:03 (63 seconds).
1.5 Mile Run - A candidate is required to run six laps (1.5 miles) around a standard ¼-mile track within 14:30 (14 minutes, 30 seconds).
Unless you are a lateral-transfer candidate, you will take the written test before the physical fitness test. Since lateral-transfer candidates do not have to take the written exam, they will take the physical fitness test first at the appointed time. Please remember to bring a change of clothes so that you will be able to perform both tests. If you have any questions about the written or physical tests, contact the New Albany Police Department at 614-855-1234.
